Thetheway Ghost
This last summer I went to a house party with a friend. It was his friend's party so he was introducing me around to some of the guests he knew. Before he could make the introduction of his buddy's wife, I recognized her from my high school. Now I've been out of high school on the shy side of 30 years, and she didn't place me. You know how you see someone's face that you should know and you study them searching for some spark of memory, she was doing that. I even named some of the classes we had together, but I could see no light going off. As we saundered around our teenage years, I mentioned the habit many of us had of driving out to the vineyards to play music, dance, goof off and inbide in all things teenage. She then mentioned a snippet of lore about a ghost that haunted Thetheway Road on the far east side of Lodi, CA past Victor. There's an old cemetary there, and I had heard the tale. But, you know how teenagers are, you shove things off, considering the girls I'd heard this from, maybe bluring and imagination mixed with marijuana and booze painting tales of ghosts, aliens and freaky happenings. I'd gone there myself and I didn't see a ghost and could explain away the quickening cold in my teenage scientific mind.
My Mom and I on Sunday went to a craft faire and she mentioned that she had gone to a party with her girlfriends to exchange Christmas presents. She was talking about how it was getting so hard to drive at night, with her eyesight and she hadn't been to her friend's house in quite some time. "Do you know where this is," she began,"out on Thetheway Road by the old cemetary?"
I said you mean the haunted cemetary, and she said, how do you know about that!! Her friend had a ghost at her house. She'd get cold spots in the house. She'd smell perfume, when she never used it due to allergies, she'd see wisps of fog, she'd feel like someone was holding her hand when she was sleeping, she got so freaked out that she had a priest come to the house and throw the ghost out.
True story.
